In Office 2007 Microsoft has significantly improved the password protection system.

Now the following applications allows to set the file opening password which is used to encrypt a document:

Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access.

These programs uses AES encryption algorithm and the SHA-1 hash is used in password verification. The password verification now is very slowly. Only short and simple passwords can be recovered.
